Concept
The Piano Trio Fest in Bern is the only piano trio festival worldwide and has established itself internationally in recent years as an independent platform for the genre, while remaining open to new perspectives and a sense of surprise.
From February 6 to March 6, 2027, we look forward to welcoming you to the 8th edition of Piano Trio Fest Bern, bringing together internationally renowned artists, young talents and a new generation of composers and performers.
In addition to the familiar ensemble of violin, cello, and piano, this year we will also explore further soundscapes with flute, clarinet, viola, natural horn, and jazz ensembles. We look forward to unforgettable experiences together with you!
Two of the participating groups will be selected through separate processes in cooperation with the Bern University of the Arts and the ORPHEUS competition. These processes adhere to the principle of gender equality in the selection process, with ensembles including women being given preference.

Commissioned composition
Commissioned composition
The Piano Trio Fest Bern will remain true to its idea in 2027 of understanding the piano trio not as a rigid ensemble, but as a living and adaptable concert form.
A special focus of the upcoming edition will be on the Swiss composer Joseph Lauber (1864-1952). At the same time, fostering exchange between generations remains a central tenet of the festival. International artists will meet young musicians and a new generation of composers and performers.
Following the commission given to the young HKB alumna Aline Sarah Müller, this year's composition commission goes to the renowned Swiss composer Xavier Dayer. With this, the festival aims to continue actively promoting dialogue between different artistic experiences and perspectives.

Troisième étude de vitesses ou de lenteurs (2026) 5’
Commissioned work for Piano Trio Fest 2027
This third study continues the exploration of the idea of a single material capable of contracting and expanding. Here, the focus shifts more strongly towards the notion of a threshold, and towards the possibility of a sound space that is traversed rather than simply passed through. Some figures condense to the point of acquiring an almost architectural quality, while others unfold until their contours begin to dissolve. In the background, the image of Domenico Trezzini shimmers through – less as a historical reference than as a way of conceiving relationships between lines, masses and spaces for breath. The trio thus becomes a place of transition between construction and instability, memory and projection.
